Pada tanggal 4 January 2009 pukul 4 pagi (waktu setempat) telah terjadi gempa cukup besar yang menggoyang Manokwari dan  Sorong.

Gempa berkekuatan 7.6 Magnitude ini diduga merupakan gempa tektonik akibat pergeseran sesar Sorong. Melihat besarnya goyangan gempa ini tentusaja Sorong – Manokwari dan sekitarnya akan porakporanda. Apalagi kedalaman gempa ini cukup dangkal yang hanya sekitar 35 Km.

Goyangan hingga VII-VII MMI ini akan sangat kuat merusak bangunan di antara kedua kota Sorong-Manokwari (terutama)

Yang perlu diperhatikan juga adanya kemungkinan tsunami. Melihat tsunami yang terjadi di masa lalu yang terjadi akibat longsorang bawah laut yang terpicu oleh goyangan gempa. Amaran tsunami dicabut sejam berikutnya setelah diketahui tidak tercatat adanya gelombang tsunami ini.

Gempa ini masih berlangsung !.

Perlu diantisipasi goyangan-goyangan selanjutnya yang masih mungkin akan bergetar dalam beberapa hari mendatang.

Kalau kita ingat gempa Jogja beberapa tahun lalu yang berkekuatan 5.8 SR saja masih terus bergetar hingga bebrapa pekan kemudian. Tentusaja gempa di Manokwari ini akan masih terus bergetar. Getaran-getaran ini tentusaja akan membuat panik.

Sebuah hotel yang runtuh di Manokwari (Hotel Mutiara) ini menunjukkan betapa besarnya goyangan gempa akibat sesar geser yang dikenal dengan Sesar Sorong (Sorong Fault).

Papua utara merupakan pertemuan antara lempeng Pasifik dengan lempeng Australia disebelah selatannya. Lempeng Pasifik bergerak ke arah barat yang membentuk sesar geser, Sesar Sorong (Sorong Fault) . Sumber gambar internet

Disebelah ini peta tektonik/peta patahan-patahan di Pulau Papua. Secara Tektonik Pulau Irian atau sekarang disebut Papua merupakan bagian dari lempeng Australia. Dari Sorong hingga Manokwari terdapat sebuah kelurusan (lineament) yang menunjukkan lokasi Sesar Sorong.

Mekanisme terbentuknya Sesar Sorong ini mirip dengan Sesar Semangko di Sumatra yang juga berupa sesar geser.

Sesar ini sangat aktif. Menurut USGS  gerakan lempeng Pasifik ini diperkirakan mampu bergerak dengan kecepatan hingga 112 mm/tahun dilokasi episenter !

The magnitude 7.6 Papua, Indonesia earthquake of January 3, 2008, 19:43 UTC, occurred as a result of thrust faulting on a plate-boundary along the northwest coast of the island of New Guinea. Eastern Indonesia is characterized by complex tectonics in which motions of numerous small plates are accommodating large-scale convergence between the Australia, Pacific, and Eurasia plates. In broad-scale plate-tectonic models that do not subdivide continent sized plates into smaller plates, the location of today’s earthquake would be on the boundary of the Pacific and Australia plates. The Pacific plate (located north and northeast of the epicenter) is moving southwest with respect to the Australia plate (located south of the epicenter) with a velocity of about 112 mm/year at the epicenter of the earthquake, and the focal-mechanism of today’s earthquake is broadly consistent with Pacific plate lithosphere being subducted beneath Australia plate lithosphere. The subduction zone along the northwest coast of New Guinea is characterized by an offshore oceanic trench, the New Guinea trench, but teleseismically recorded earthquake hypocenters do not show a well-developed inclined seismic zone (a Wadati-Benioff zone) dipping south-southwest from the trench.

The earthquake of January 3, 2008, 19:43 UTC, occurred about 470 km west of the magnitude 8.2 earthquake of February 17, 1996. The 1996 earthquake produced a tsunami that was destructive on the island of Biak. At least 108 people were killed by the 1996 earthquake and associated tsunami.
